The Special Nature Reserve of the Sacro Monte della S.S. Trinità of Ghiffa was established by regional law in 1987 to protect the historical buildings and enhance the natural environment. Inside is the Baroque monumental complex of Sacro Monte, named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, which with a sanctuary and three chapels celebrates the Mystery of the Holy Trinity. Rising on the site of an ancient oratory, the Sanctuary of Ghiffa was built from 1605 onwards to accommodate the large number of pilgrims who visited because the place was considered miraculous.
