Complesso monumentale Santi Gervaso e Protaso in Baveno

The church, dating back to the 12th century, is a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture with a gabled façade and a six-storey bell tower with a square plan, walled single lancet windows and irregularly arranged cobblestone masonry. The single-nave interior with six chapels is the result of various interventions with 15th-century frescoes, interesting altar frontals in the side chapels added in the 18th century, two panels attributed to Defendente Ferrari (16th century) and an Annunciation by Camillo Procaccini. On the central vault, the precious 16th-century wooden crucifix is the background to a vision of Golgotha frescoed by the Francinetti, Andrea and Giovanni, from Gignese (mid-19th century).
